When 「Justice」 Becomes Another Knife: How Online Vigilantism Hurts the Child It Claims to Protect

On the evening of 6 October 2026, a 10-year-old girl in Fu Tai Estate, Tuen Mun, was filmed in her school uniform, a torn backpack on her shoulders, carrying two heavy bags of beer (around 12 kg) as she struggled up a footpath. She had to set the bags down to rest; a can of beer tumbled out of her backpack, and she looked exhausted.

The clip went viral overnight, and the whole city was outraged. The next day, police arrested the girl's father and mother on suspicion of cruelty to, or neglect of, a child or young person. The Social Welfare Department said it had contacted the family and would convene a multi-disciplinary conference to assess their needs.

The sense of justice this sparked is genuine. But beneath the chorus of "why didn't anyone call the police earlier," there is one voice that may never have been truly heard — the voice of the child.

🤍 A simulated voice (not the child's own words)

Dear uncles and aunties, big brothers and sisters: I am the girl in that video, in my school uniform, struggling to carry two big bags of beer up the slope. These past few days I have been so scared, hiding under my blanket crying every night, too afraid to sleep.

I know you are angry online because you care about me and want to fight for justice. But I am begging you — please stop. Every angry word you write becomes something sharp, stabbing me in the chest.

The police and social workers took my parents away. The adults say it's not my fault, but I hide in a corner and keep asking myself: if I had walked a little faster that day? If I hadn't dropped that can of beer? Would our family still be together? I feel it is all my fault.

I am also afraid that my sister and little brother will be separated from me. My sister secretly asked me, "Are we bad? Is that why nobody wants us?" I didn't know how to answer.

You say you want to protect me, but why do the words you write make me feel more hopeless? My parents really do have many problems. The way Dad scolded me that day hurt me deeply. But just like in your own home, adults also have their pressures, and their moments of helplessness.

I only ask one thing: please stop judging my family in the name of justice. Please give our family a little space to stop the bleeding. A primary-school student who just wants to go back to school, and go back home.

(The above is a simulated passage, imagining what a child might be feeling. It is not a statement made by the girl herself.)

🏠 Layer One: The child is not the "culprit" — she is carrying the whole family's weight

The most heartbreaking part is not that the girl could barely lift the beer; it is that she took all the responsibility onto herself. "If I had walked faster," "If I hadn't dropped that can" — this is a classic child's way of thinking. Children cannot grasp the complexity of the adult world, so they explain family misfortune with "maybe it's because I'm bad."

This self-blame is the heaviest source of secondary harm. And what deepens it is often not the family's hardship itself, but the judgement of the outside world — when a whole city says "this family shouldn't exist," how is a child supposed to understand herself?

🏠 Layer Two: Inside a family system, there are no simple "good guys" and "bad guys"

The father in that clip said something deeply hurtful. That is a fact, and it deserves to be taken seriously.

But holistic psychology reminds us that a family rarely collapses because of a single "bad person." Poverty, stress, the caregiver's physical and mental state, and the lack of a support network are all systemic factors. When a family is already this fragile, condemnation and judgement alone will not give the child better care — they may well tear apart the last thread holding that family together.

It is easy to condemn a person. It is hard to see a system.

📱 Layer Three: How online justice becomes collective harm

This is the heart of this article.

Many of those comments began with good intentions. But once good intentions merge into a crowd, they can lose their direction. Judgemental comments bind her identity. And the darkest comments project unspoken harm onto a 10-year-old — those words are themselves another form of violence.

We often think "justice" stands on the child's side. But sometimes the loudest justice becomes the heaviest stone pressed upon her. Real protection is never about judging — it is about making the harm stop.

🕊️ Layer Four: What the protection system should do — and what we should do

Since the incident, the police, the Social Welfare Department, and the school have all stepped in. The role of these institutions is to assess, support, and follow up — not to "punish a family for the public to see."

What each of us can actually do is both simple and hard: stop writing judgemental comments, because the child will read them; and turn our concern into action by supporting Hong Kong's child-protection organisations and family services, so genuinely vulnerable families receive real help rather than online flogging.

🌱 Closing

There is no "simple answer" in this case. We can believe two things at once: the child's situation must be taken seriously and needs professional intervention; and the collective judgement online will not truly help that child — it only adds another layer of wound on top of her wound.

To protect a child is not to judge someone on her behalf; it is to let her know that her worth is not negated by her family's circumstances.
