Mindful Breathing Guide

Breath is our most reliable anchor. When the mind races and emotions surge, coming back to the breath is coming back to the present moment. Here are three exercises you can do anytime, anywhere.

Exercise 1: Belly Breathing

Sit upright or lie down, one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 seconds, feeling the belly rise; exhale slowly through the mouth for 6 seconds, feeling the belly fall. Repeat 5–10 times.

Use when: feeling tense, heart racing, or struggling to relax before sleep.

Exercise 2: 4-7-8 Breathing

Inhale through the nose for 4 seconds → hold for 7 seconds → exhale slowly through the mouth for 8 seconds. That is one cycle; repeat 4 times.

Use when: anxiety hits, emotions are about to overflow, or you need to calm down quickly.

Exercise 3: Aware Breathing

Do not change your breath, just notice it. Feel the coolness of air entering the nostrils and the warmth leaving. Mind wandered? Gently bring it back. Continue for 3–5 minutes.

Use when: practising presence and building awareness in daily life.

Reminder: breathing practice is not about "controlling" the breath, but "accompanying" it. No need to be perfect — just keep returning to the present, again and again.
