Counselling vs Psychotherapy: What's the Difference?

Counselling vs Psychotherapy: What's the Difference?

Many people are confused about the difference between "counselling" and "psychotherapy", assuming they are the same. They are actually quite different.

🤝 Counselling

Usually for everyday struggles: stress, relationships, emotional regulation, work transitions, marital issues. Shorter-term (a few to a dozen sessions), present-focused, helping you clarify your thoughts and find direction.

🏥 Psychotherapy

For deeper, longer-term psychological issues: depression, anxiety, trauma, long-standing relationship patterns. Longer-term, exploring past causes and inner patterns to create change from the root.

🌿 A holistic view

In Holistic Psychology, this distinction matters less. What matters is the whole person — whether counselling or therapy, we should look at body, mind, spirit and environment together, not just the "symptom" or "problem".

So instead of agonising over "do I need counselling or therapy?", ask: which professional is willing to truly see the whole of me?
