Why 「Forging Relationships」 Put Connection First — When Schools Say Mental Health Isn't a Solo Journey

🧩 When "Relationship" Finally Steps Ahead of "the Individual"

The Education Bureau is launching the "Friend Sunny" Campus Action in the 2026/27 school year. The launch ceremony was held on 29 August 2026, officiated by the Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, with close to 400 principals, teachers, and student counsellors in attendance. What makes this campaign worth noticing is not that there is one more programme, but that for the first time the authorities have placed relationships above individual counselling — the entire core theme for 2026/27 is "resilience and interpersonal relationships".

From a Holistic Psychology perspective, this is not an administrative slogan; it is official recognition that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts — a person's emotions are never located solely inside their own brain.

👥 The Two Words "Friend" and "Sunny" Are Themselves About Networks

Why "Friend Sunny"? The official explanation is that "Friend" stands for peers watching over and caring for one another, while "Sunny" stands for hope and warmth — and it also carries the Chinese word for "feeling". One character points to relationships, the other to emotion. That pairing is itself the answer: emotion comes alive inside relationships.

Traditional Western psychology tends to treat emotion as a private matter "inside the brain", something to be worked through alone behind closed doors. But a student's emotions are never located solely inside their head — they are born in the network woven by teacher–student relationships × peer relationships × parent–child relationships.

🌱 From "How Do I Get Better" to "How Do We Get Better Together"

In response to World Mental Health Day on 10 October, the Education Bureau has designated October 2026 to January 2027 as "4Rs Mental Health Month". The 4Rs are Rest, Relaxation, Relationship, and Resilience — and Hong Kong swimming record holder Stephanie Au is serving as the "4Rs Charter Mental Health Ambassador".

Notice that two of the four Rs (Relationship and Resilience) cannot be separated from people: resilience is not about toughing it out alone, but about knowing that someone will catch you when you are exhausted. This is a very clear signal: a move from individualism toward collective belonging.

🔗 Relationship Itself Is Medicine

Traditional Western psychology (such as Freudian psychoanalysis) focuses too heavily on "individual counselling" — one-on-one, behind closed doors, working on the "self", and it can take as long as ten years to show results. Its blind spot is precisely what it overlooks: relationship itself is medicine.

Research has long told us this: the need to belong is one of the most fundamental human motivations, and social relationships affect mortality risk to a degree comparable to smoking and other well-known risk factors. It is not "heal yourself first, then go back out and build relationships" — building the relationship is itself the healing.

🤝 Schools No Longer Ask "Who Has a Problem", But "Is There Someone to Catch Them"

The traditional school approach is to ask "which student has a problem and where should they be referred" — hidden inside that question is an assumption: the problem lives inside the student. But "Friend Sunny" asks a different question: is there someone in the environment to catch them?

This shift matters. Holistic Psychology has always emphasised not labelling people — not splitting students into "problem / no problem", but looking at the whole system: a child who is "unhappy" may be the product of classroom atmosphere, peer circles, and home relationships all at once. Changing the environment and the relationships is often more fundamental than counselling one person on their own.

✨ Mental Health Is Not a Solo Journey

The deepest message of the "Friend Sunny" campaign is this: emotions are born in relationships, and so is healing. Want to experience what it means to be truly seen? Book a free 10-minute WhatsApp consultation.
