Job-Hunting at "9.9/10 Difficulty": Midlife Identity Crisis Isn't Just Personal Failure
"56 years old. Job-hunting difficulty: 9.9 out of 10." A Hong Kong man wrote this on social media, adding, self-mockingly, "Even if I knew the Nine Yang Divine Skill, it wouldn't help" 😞. He wasn't joking — the moment his age comes up in an interview, he's told to go home and wait for news.
At the same time, the Census and Statistics Department reported that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for June–August 2026 rose to 3.8% — about 153,900 people out of work. The Labour and Welfare Bureau's "Manpower Projection Mid-term Update" further projects that "clerical support workers" will be in surplus by 25,000 to 30,000 by 2028, as AI takes over routine administrative work. The hardest hit are exactly fresh graduates and mid-career clerical staff.
When you are one of those "numbers", it hurts. But today I want to tell you: this is not your personal failure — the whole environment has shifted.
🌊 It's not "you're not good enough" — the environment changed
AI replacing clerical jobs, supplementary labour, industry transformation — these are system-level shifts, not a question of your individual ability.
Traditional Western psychology loves to push the problem back onto the "individual": telling you to "upskill, get another AI certificate, boost your competitiveness". But when an entire clerical industry is structurally shrinking, individual effort is only a drop in the bucket. You can earn every certificate and still not catch up, because the industry itself is contracting.
Holistic psychology sees it differently. It holds that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts": your situation is the combined result of person × family × industry × market × policy. To see clearly, you have to see the whole picture — not just blame yourself.
💔 The pain of midlife isn't "no work" — it's losing your identity
This is the deepest wound. Many people in midlife have their sense of worth tied to "the job / the title" — "I'm a manager", "I'm an engineer", "I'm a teacher".
The moment the job is gone, it's not just losing income — the whole person feels hollowed out: Am I still that "useful person"? What value do I have left? How do I face my family when I go home?
This "identity crisis" is harder to bear than unemployment itself, because traditional society taught us: your worth = your job title. But that equation is wrong to begin with.
📊 Age discrimination is real, not imagined
The Equal Opportunities Commission's Exploratory Study on Age Discrimination in Employment found:
- 35% of working people experienced age-related discrimination in the past 5 years;
- 78% believe those aged 60+ are most vulnerable to age discrimination;
- 67% say those aged 50–59 are equally at risk.
A charity survey also found that about six in ten people aged 46–75 found it hard to secure suitable roles, and two in ten had to apply for at least 20 jobs to get one interview.
So when you wonder "why can't I find work no matter how hard I try?", the answer is very likely not in you, but in a market that has not yet eliminated age discrimination.
🏷️ Why traditional Western psychology can't help
First, it is too individualistic: "upskill, get certified, reflect on yourself" — reframing structural unemployment as a "personal psychological problem".
Second, it labels you: "midlife crisis", "poor adaptability", "career burnout"… these words, like that "9.9/10" helplessness, just put you in a category.
Third, it digs slowly — into childhood, into the unconscious, possibly for years. But a mid-career worker faces the immediate pressure of "can I pay next month's rent?" — there's no time to wait.
🤝 The way out: define yourself by "relationship", not "position"
Holistic psychology's answer is: redefine who you are.
- You're not just an "ex-manager" — you're a good father, a good husband, someone who can cook, a friend someone in your community relies on.
- Your sense of worth can come from contribution — how many people and relationships you help, not what title you hold.
- Belonging is the real remedy: people on the same path, a community that walks with you, someone willing to truly listen — these hold you better than a "perfect job".
The job can go, but "you" haven't disappeared. Your worth was never meant to be defined by a name tag.
The environment changed, but you are not useless. Your worth lives in "relationships" and "contribution", not in a "job title".
