How to Name Your Company: Simple, Easy to Pronounce, Positive
Starting a company or brand? The name is your first business card. But many founders make one mistake: thinking a more complicated, "sophisticated" name is more impressive. Psychology says the opposite.
🧠 The familiarity effect: easy to read means easy to remember and spread
Psychologist Robert Zajonc proposed the mere-exposure effect: the more familiar we are with something, the more we tend to like it.
Applied to a company name: an easy-to-read, easy-to-spell, easy-to-remember name gets repeated — colleague referrals, client word-of-mouth, Google searches. Every exposure is a liking boost. A hard-to-spell name is forgotten, unspoken, unsearchable — less exposure, weaker brand.
✅ Principle 1: Simple, easy to read and spell
- Customers remember it after hearing it once, and can read it at a glance;
- English spelling is simple — no unpronounceable letter combinations;
- It passes the "spell it back" test over the phone;
- The domain name is easy to type and remember.
✅ Principle 2: Positive
A company name is your brand's "self-suggestion". A positive name is a positive association every time it appears.
- Avoid negative associations;
- Avoid unlucky homophones;
- Choose words that carry success, growth, trust and light.
🎸 The classic example: Loosers became Wynners
Hong Kong's legendary band "The Wynners" started as "The Loosers" — a name that sounded like "Losers". In 1973 they renamed themselves "The Wynners" ("Winners") and became a legend of Hong Kong music.
Same team, just a new name — from "losers" to "winners". A brand name is a daily self-fulfilling mantra: call yourself "loser" and you remind yourself daily that you lose; call yourself "winner" and you remind yourself daily that you win.
✅ Principle 3: Distinctiveness + industry relevance + domain availability
- Some link to your industry, product or values, so people get it instantly;
- Distinct from competitors — don't sound too similar;
- Check that the domain (.com / .hk) and social handles are available.
A good company name has three things: simple, easy to pronounce, positive. Easy to remember and spread — that's how affection builds.
