Happiness at 2.87 — "Not Pretty Enough" Is a Collective Wound
Do you keep feeling "not pretty enough", "not thin enough", "not good enough"? 🤳
You are not alone. A survey on secondary students' happiness by the Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service found that Hong Kong students scored just 2.87 out of 5 on well-being — and more than 20% were at high risk of appearance anxiety, with girls reaching 33%, double the rate of boys. 😔
🔍 Appearance anxiety is not your fault
Many people think "feeling ugly" is "low self-confidence". Wrong.
Holistic psychology believes: appearance anxiety is not a personal problem, but a "collective wound" manufactured by the whole society.
Social media filters, a single beauty standard, consumer-culture advertising... every day, hundreds of messages tell you "you are still not good enough". Your pain was never yours alone. 🌊
🏷️ "Pretty / ugly" are just labels
"Pretty", "ugly", "fat", "thin" — these are all labels, narrowing your entire worth down to a single dimension: appearance.
But how can a person's worth be decided by one face, one body shape? You are a whole person — with feelings, relationships, dreams and belonging. 💛
🔗 Body and environment, tied together
The body is not a standalone object. When you live in an environment of constant "comparison", your body image, self-worth and social acceptance are tied together.
So telling you to "lighten up" or "learn to accept yourself" simply does not work — the problem is not in you, but in the environment that keeps manufacturing comparison.
🌱 What can we do?
Stop measuring a person by "pretty or not". See the whole person — their kindness, talent, effort, and connection to others.
Because the real you is already good enough. 💛
