Eating Together, Each on Our Phones — Being 「Here」 Isn't Being 「Together」

Eating Together, Each on Our Phones — Being 「Here」 Isn't Being 「Together」

It's 8pm. A family sits down for dinner. The dishes are steaming 🍲 and the TV is on 📺, but the things actually "talking" are five phones.

Dad 💼 is answering work messages, Mum 🛍️ is scrolling a friend's new photos, big brother 🎮 is gaming, little sister 📱 is watching short clips, and Grandma 🍚 is staring at her bowl with no one to talk to.

Everyone is "here". And yet, no one is "together".

This scene plays out every night in countless Hong Kong families. We rarely think anything of it — it's just how it is. But if you stop and look, you'll notice something strange: we are sitting closer than ever, yet our hearts are further apart. 😔

📱 Why has it come to this? — It isn't that anyone is cold

Many people say: "People these days only care about their phones. There's no warmth left." 😤

But looking down at a screen isn't necessarily coldness. Dad 💼 just wants to switch off after work, Mum 🧺 wants to find "herself" again, and the teenager 🎒 wants to find someone who understands them — in their phone. 🥺

And this is the real point: it isn't "whose fault it is", but that "we are slowly forgetting how to connect".

🔗 Presence is not connection

There's a distinction here that is worth thinking about carefully.

Presence 🪑 is "I am sitting next to you".
Connection 💞 is "I am looking at you and I know how your day was".

A family can sit down to dinner together every night yet exchange zero words — that is presence, not connection. 😐

On the other hand, a mother and daughter might only get half an hour a week, but in that half hour the mother truly looks at her daughter and listens — not scrolling her phone going "mm-hmm" — and that is connection. 👩‍👧

There is a Harvard study that followed a group of people for eighty years to find out "what makes people happy". The answer wasn't money 💰, fame 🏆 or achievement 📈 — it was relationships. How good your relationships are with family, friends and partners is the single strongest predictor of happiness in later life.

In other words: the most precious thing in a family isn't the dinner table or the house — it's those few minutes of "truly looking at each other". 🏠

🏮 The ancients already knew — connection is the foundation

There's an old saying: "家和萬事興" — when the family is in harmony, everything prospers.

As a child you hear it and think it's just something old people say. But as you grow up you realise it holds real wisdom. 🧠

"Family harmony" doesn't mean "never argue" — it means that whether a family has genuine connection affects how each person fares out in the world.

When someone comes home and feels "someone is listening to me, someone cares about me", they walk back out the next day standing a little steadier in the face of work, school and pressure. That is the power of connection — it is the "foundation" beneath everything. 🌱

The ancients had another layer: "family harmony" is the precondition of "everything prospers", not the result. That is to say — don't think "once I've sorted out everything outside, then I'll come home to my family"; instead, "get the connection at home right first, and the outside will follow".

🌱 How to begin? — Small steps, no need to leap

So how do you slowly find that feeling of being "together" again? No grand gestures needed — start with something very small:

  • 📵 Put the phones face down. For those thirty minutes of dinner, everyone turns their phone face down on the table. That's it.
  • 💬 Ask "how was your day?" — not "have you revised?" or "have you finished your work?", but "what was something good or bad about today?".
  • 👀 Look at the person while they answer. When someone is talking, don't scroll your phone — look at them. One look says more than a thousand words.

These things sound simple, but it's precisely because they're simple that they're so easy to overlook. 😉
